The Missing Foundations of Growth: Why Strengths Matter More Than We Think.
Organisations expect their people to develop, grow, adapt and perform but beyond training courses, we rarely give them the tools to do so. To really help people thrive, we need to offer support for their mindset, nervous system and beliefs and one step towards this is understanding their strengths.
Strengths are our natural energiser.
Strengths aren’t just things you’re good at, nor are they our skills. They’re the patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that energise you, stabilise you, and help you navigate the world with confidence. They’re the internal scaffolding that makes growth feel possible rather than overwhelming.
Knowing our strengths provide the opportunity to lean into and do more of what we love, feel grounded and aligned. On the flip, we can spend less time worrying and trying to develop the things that drain us.
The real barrier to growth is NOT a skills gap. It is the internal knowledge of self.
Most people are not held back because of capability, capacity or lack of desire to grow. They are held back because of lack of understanding and inner beliefs that shape their confidence.
- A mindset that tells them they are not ready
- Nervous system stuck in survival mode (flight, flight or freeze could play out)
- Stepping out of comfort zone feels too unsafe
- Emotional patterns shaped on past experiences
- Limiting beliefs and thoughts that shape what they believe is possible
- Lack of clarity and understand about their strengths and potential
These barriers create friction, friction creates self-doubt, self-doubt creates hesitation and hesitation can look like under-performance. Instead, we are just not seeing our whole selves.
Strengths are a tool to reduce that friction and start understanding self.
When people know their strengths, they know themselves.
Stability to grow into themselves with the foundation of who they really are, and no longer try and become someone else.
Emotional regulation that leaves people in control, capable and regulated because they are leaning into their strengths and naturally supporting their nervous system. You are working with you which can only be a good thing.
A Growth Mindset that feels like endless possibilities, not fixing weaknesses. People start to explore what they could achieve and expand their world through positive curiosity.
Natural Confidence that comes from within, not learnt, not forced, just a natural confidence because you are working from a place of energy, motivation and understanding self.
Sustainable Performance becomes the norm. People perform when they are energised and motivated. Working with our strengths is naturally energising.
Barriers begin to shrink when strengths are visible
The natural defaults when unsure of our strengths can be loud and invasive:
- Overlooking what makes them powerful and successful
- Assuming natural abilities do not count
- Always drained because they try to develop and grow in ways that are not personal strengths to ‘fit’ the environment/job
- Burnout can creep in quickly when overcompensating perceived weaknesses
- Feeling like they are always falling short
When we compared that to when strengths become visible and people start leaning into them, all of a sudden people are likely to feel confident in decision making, stop wasting energy to fit the environment, perform with energy and excitement, and look for ways to use their strengths more to develop further, and faster. What an exciting way to deliver excellence!
Creating high performing teams through Strengths
When teams and organisation face change, and challenges start to arise for people, those that know their strengths are more likely to adapt, more likely to continue to perform and more like to avoid burnout. Once you know your strengths, you also engage with your mindset, nervous system and beliefs, which enables people to navigate challenges and change with clarity, courage and self-belief.
At Trans4mative Minds, our work really comes alive when working with a team to understand their strengths, individually and collectively. We provide Strengths insight and knowledge that equips teams to collaborate, understand, engage and connect with one another effectively and ultimately create an awareness of where the team gets their energy from, how they could work differently and most importantly, where they might have some gaps, or be too heavy in one area. Recently, one team we worked with did not have a single person with a clear strength in the ‘relational quadrant, such as leading, empathy, collaboration and therefore this highlighted why they were struggling to engage well with another team. This led to healthy conversations and debates in the room about how they could leverage their strengths to fill this gap. With some experimentation and trial and error, the team built a positive collaboration with another team.
We paired our strengths work with additional self-awareness foundations to support the individuals with tools to explore a growth mindset, managing change and transition, and nervous system regulation. When we combine different layers of self-awareness, amazing things happen with how we turn up and perform at work.
It allows people to focus on the things that energise them within the change, knowing how they work best to navigate the change and know how they can approach it best with the strengths that energise them even when it’s hard.
If people can lead themselves with knowledge of their strengths first and foremost, then they can navigate the world of work with integrity, courage, curiosity and the ability to thrive.
So, is it really a capability problem, or is it and internal awareness gap.
Organisations choosing to focus on their people, their mindset, their strengths and their nervous systems not only proactively helps their people avoid burnout, but it is also positively enabling their people to engage in a strengths based, energy driven performance culture that aims to highlight everyone’s individual strengths.
I could not image working in a better environment than one that champions and encourages their people to lean into their strengths and work as a team to maximise their collective energy for lasting impact.
