Choose the qualification around responsibilities and assessment needs.
Choose ILM Level 3 when your managers need to develop first-line leadership capability; explore Level 5 when their responsibilities extend into operational or middle management. Check the exact qualification and assessment route before booking. A job title alone cannot settle the choice. For an employer buying for a cohort, the question is what managers must do at work and whether the programme lets them develop and demonstrate it. No like-for-like qualification fee comparison is available here, so request a complete cohort quote.
Compare the current ILM routes
ILM’s current suite separates knowledge-focused Development qualifications from workplace-assessed Skills qualifications. The comparison below uses the routes published on its website, checked on 1 November 2026. Both the level and the route matter.

Knowledge route | Leadership and Management Development 8720. Award or Certificate; assignment assessment. | Operational Leadership and Management Development 8721. Award or Certificate; assignment assessment. |

Match responsibilities before job titles
A supervisor coordinating shifts, allocating tasks and giving feedback has a different development brief from a manager planning departmental resources or leading change across teams. Describe those responsibilities to the centre. These are illustrative buying scenarios, not entry rules or a guarantee of suitability.
For a mixed cohort, ask the centre to assess fit individually. Putting everyone with “manager” in their title on the same qualification may overlook differences in responsibility and opportunity to practise. Equally, choosing Level 5 as a reward for seniority does not establish that the programme meets the person’s needs. Agree the intended workplace application first.
Choose knowledge development or workplace assessment
ILM describes Development routes as knowledge-focused and assessed through assignments, without requiring learners to generate workplace evidence. These can be relevant when someone is preparing for responsibility they do not yet hold. Skills routes use portfolios based on work activities and require opportunities to demonstrate capability.
Ask the centre what each participant will need access to. Who can authorise a project, provide feedback or enable evidence gathering? How will confidential workplace information be handled? A programme timetable can look manageable while the assessment remains difficult to complete in the person’s current role. Resolve that before registration.
Check qualification size and study time
Level describes the qualification’s level of demand; Award, Certificate and Diploma describe its size within the relevant suite. They are separate choices. Do not compare a Level 3 Diploma with a Level 5 Award and assume the higher number means more learning hours.
The Skills Certificate figures in the table illustrate this: the two routes list the same guided learning hours but different total qualification time. Guided learning hours cover learning under supervision; total qualification time is the estimated overall commitment, including other learning and assessment. Neither is simply the number of classroom days. Ask for the centre’s actual timetable, independent study expectations, assessment milestones and access period.
Verify the qualification and delivery centre
Request the full qualification title, suite code, qualification number and size in the proposal. Use ILM’s centre finder and ask who will register learners, deliver tuition, assess work and claim certificates. If delivery involves a partner, establish the approved centre relationship in writing. A TheTM Verified Expert badge is a platform credential, not approval for an ILM qualification.
Current and legacy titles may appear in provider materials during changes to qualification suites. Ask which specification applies to your intake and confirm registration and completion deadlines. Do not transfer the hours, units or assessment method in this table to a differently coded programme.
If the awarding organisation is still open
If your brief allows a CMI qualification, ACUDEMY is a TheTM Verified Expert whose current catalogue lists CMI Level 3 First Line Management and Leadership and Level 5 Management and Leadership routes. It is an alternative enquiry when the business need matters more than the awarding organisation. These are CMI offers, not evidence of an ILM Level 3 or Level 5 programme. Confirm the exact programme and centre arrangements before booking.

Request a complete qualification quote
Ask suppliers to separate tuition, awarding-body registration, assessment, certification, learning materials and tutor support. Establish resubmission charges, extensions, VAT and any travel costs. Use the same qualification, cohort size and support requirements when comparing proposals. A general leadership trainer day rate cannot stand in for the fee for an assessed qualification.
Agree protected study time and the learner’s manager’s responsibilities alongside the price. Before purchase, ask how the centre will identify a participant who falls behind, what support is available and how you will review progress without accessing confidential assessment material.
Frequently asked questions
Which level suits first-time managers
Discuss Level 3 for first-line responsibilities and Level 5 for wider operational or middle-management responsibilities. Choose from the actual role and development needs, then ask an approved centre to check each participant’s fit.
Does every ILM route require workplace evidence
No. The current Development routes use assignment assessment without a requirement to generate workplace evidence. Skills routes use portfolios based on workplace activity. Confirm the exact qualification in the proposal.
Is a Diploma always better than an Award
No. Qualification size should reflect the scope of learning needed and the time available. Compare the exact units, assessment requirements and learning commitment rather than treating size as a quality ranking.
Can our cohort study online
Ask an approved centre about delivery for the exact qualification, including live tuition, independent study, assessment and tutor access. Online delivery does not remove the evidence requirements of a workplace-assessed route.
Send a qualification brief
Tell TaMi what your managers are responsible for and whether an ILM qualification is essential. Include the cohort, evidence opportunities and study time available. Ask TheTM to help identify suitable options, then verify the qualification and centre relationship before commissioning.
